historical performance practice resources

Welcome to the flute-based resources for historical performance practices, including ornamentation, meter and tempo, rhetoric, and improvisation. This page is part of my article, "Real-time composition in the 18th century" in The Flutist Quarterly Spring 2015 issue. Go to the NFA Online for more information. The links will take you either to an actual piece of music in a modern edition or facsimile, a YouTube video, or to a website to buy the material (books or music). Each link takes you to music referred to in the article or to examples of the techniques discussed therein.

As you view the page you will see the material is divided into sections. music: printed; music: audio-visual; primary sources; secondary literature. The last category is divided into performance practice, rhetoric, and improvisation. Please note that the materials presented here are merely a dusting of ice on the tip of the iceberg and should by no means be considered a comprehensive list. They are, to be sure, a good place to begin your research into ornamentation and Baroque performance practices. If you have any questions about this material or are interested in additional sources, please send me an email. If enough people have similar questions I will respond to them by creating a blog post (click on the Blog tab above). If you would like to have a lesson or coaching in Baroque style, in person or virtually, please click on the "Lessons" tab above or below, and send me a message so we can schedule a day and time.
