musicology, historical flutes, & performance practices

lesson philosopy

My applied music teaching philosophy has developed over time by working with students from diverse backgrounds. For example, I taught a man with multiple sclerosis how to play the recorder. Together we learned many things about music, ourselves, and communicating. In particular we learned the difference between process- and goal-oriented learning. The former will help you reach the latter, but if you focus on the goal, your processes may be flawed or unorganized. In a supportive environment most people are able to learn almost anything. Once the environment is in place, I ask the students to push beyond their respective comfort zones to reach a place they previously thought unattainable.

In addition, modern performers often seek new ways to interpret music from the Baroque era on their modern instruments. For many years I have helped musicians to bridge the gap between the expectations of modern performance practices and the rhetoric of Baroque music.
